Air Force Corporate Standards
Comply with Department of Defense criteria and Air Force criteria for climate resilience of facilities while meeting UFC requirements for High Performance and Sustainable Buildings (HPSB). Bases are required to screen, assess and monitor climate-related risks following Air Force criteria. Define climate resilience mitigation strategies for facilities in the base’s Installation Facilities Standards (IFS).
Generally locate and site Air Force facilities to avoid risks associated with severe weather and climate phenomenon. When facilities are operationally required in areas of risk, provide designs to withstand risks and climate-related events to maintain functionality and protect personnel.
Follow UFC 1-200-02 High-Performance and Sustainable Buildings and life-cycle cost effectively integrate natural design strategies, passive systems and renewable energy systems prior to the design of active systems. As the level of risk increases, prioritize the use of passive and renewable-energy systems.
Sustainability
Define the preferred site design strategies in the IFS to mitigate climate-related risks. Evaluate strategies to determine whether passive and natural design strategies and features are cost effectively incorporated before active systems are designed.
Respond to severe weather and climate phenomenon while preserving the optimum building orientation to maximize energy efficiency, passive solar and daylighting potential; develop passive strategies as the priority, supplemented with technological strategies, to ensure climate resilience.
